Beyonce and Rihanna are both making history for people of color in this way.

Beyonce will be on the cover of Vogue for their September issue (the most important issue of the year) while Rihanna is also on the cover of the British Vogue for the same month. So how are RiRi and Bey making history? Rihanna is the first black woman on the cover of British Vogue’s coveted September issue in its 102 year history. Beyonce personally picked the very first black cover photographer in the magazine’s 126-year history.

Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has given Beyonce “unprecedented control” over the photo shoot, which the singer has leveraged to hire 23-year-old photographer Tyler Mitchell. The Brooklyn-based photographer has both for big publications and luxury brands in his very short but impressive career.

Rihanna, on the other hand, will be on the cover of British Vogue for the magazine’s first black editor-in-cheif Edward Enninful’s very first September issue.

In explaining why he picked Rihanna to grace the cover of the September issue, Enninful wrote: “No matter how haute the styling goes, or experimental the mood, you never lose her in the imagery. She is always Rihanna. There’s a lesson for us all in that. Whichever way you choose to dress the new season, take a leaf out of her book and be yourself.”
