Mason Mount made his Manchester United debut in a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, and his game-related statistics have stirred much controversy.
Raphael Varane of United scored the game’s sole goal as United defeated Wolves to earn three critical points in their Premier League debut.
The victory, however, was marred by a contentious VAR ruling as Andre Onana, making his goalkeeping debut, jumped out of his net and eliminated Sasa Kalajdzic of Wolves in stoppage time.
Surprisingly, the referee decided against consulting the monitor or giving the opposition a penalty.
In other news, Mount made his competitive debut for the team in the early July £60 million move that made him United’s first summer signing from Chelsea.
The 69-minute game was played by the England international before Christian Eriksen took his place.
The 24-year-old was one of several United players at Old Trafford who tried to pull a fast one on the crowd. According to TalkSPORT, Mount played the entire game with zero goals, zero assists, zero chances created, zero crosses made, zero tackles won, and zero aerial duels won.
Matheus Nunes and Matheus Cunha found midfield runs to be enjoyable throughout the game, but United was consistently outmatched there. Only the Midlands club’s inability to score in goal prevented them from salvaging something from the contest. Wolfsburg had 23 attempts at goal.
Wolves will be frustrated that they did not get their first point. The club has lost each of their five Premier League away games while being winless in nine of those contests (D2 L7). Their previous record for the longest road losing streak in the top division was six games from September to December of 2011.
Gary Neville stated: “I thought Wolves were absolutely fantastic tonight” on Sky Sports.
“Manchester United’s midfield was nonexistent, and the front three weren’t defensively committed enough.
Wolves hired a new manager four days ago, and the outlook for their season seemed bleak, but they performed fantastically.
“United was outplayed, so it’s a blessing they were able to salvage three points.
