‘They could have done it’: Chelsea told they should have signed ‘special’ £100m player in the summer

Chelsea should have gone all out and signed Brentford’s Ivan Toney in the most recent summer transfer window.

That is according to Peterborough United owner and talkSPORT regular Darragh MacAnthony.

Ivan Toney, who’s now 27, hasn’t kicked a ball yet this season while he serves a ban for breaching betting regulations. He’s available to play again from mid-January, though.

In the meantime, the Brentford striker is still a popular name in the transfer rumour mill as clubs circle for him. It’s no real surprise when you remember he scored 20 goals in 33 Premier League games last season.

Chelsea should have gone even bigger

We’ve seen the Blues go huge in recent transfer windows under this ownership, but they’ve been told they missed out by not spending on Toney.

“Chelsea should have bought him (Toney) in August,” Macanthony told talkSPORT.

“They would have a ready-made striker ready to go in January who’s already in the dressing room and well in with the manager.

“They could have done it. They had the money.”

Ivan Toney interest

Nobody snapped up Toney in the summer. Now, as he prepares to enter the final 18 months of his Brentford deal, he’s linked with a potential transfer exit.

The Independent reported last month that Chelsea are expected to make a move to sign Toney in the upcoming January window.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports claimed that Brentford could demand as much as £100million for Chelsea and Arsenal target Toney.

He’s definitely the kind of forward we would love to see leading the line at Stamford Bridge, but the club’s record when it comes to investing in high-profile strikers is pretty suspect.
