Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd: United escape Anfield with hard-earned point as Diogo Dalot sent off – reaction

DIOGO DALOT was sent off for Manchester United for double dissent in the dying seconds at Anfield, but the game ended in a stalemate.

The bizarre incident saw the Portuguese fume at Michael Oliver for not giving a throw-in to United, who booked him for dissent and then straight away again.

Luis Diaz was denied by a mad scramble inside the United box, but Liverpool could not break through the excellent Jonny Evans.

United had a couple of good chances too, with Rasmus Hojlund and Alejando Garnacho both denied.

Red Devils with something to build on

Erik ten Hag will take some confidence from this game.

They have some tough league games coming up as they face both Aston Villa and Tottenham.

As they get players back from injury and suspension, they can push on and try and change their fortunes this season.

Reds with tough run ahead

Liverpool need to pick themselves up from this disappointing result today and get ready for the challenge ahead.

Next up for Jurgen Klopp’s side is West Ham in the Carabao Cup before they take on league leaders Arsenal at Anfield next weekend.

Early in January, they will travel to The Emirates to face Mikel Arteta’s side again in the FA Cup.

Visitors prosper from lack of attacking intent

Often in games, Liverpool score goals from situations where the opponents are attacking them.

Today, Man Utd offered very little going forward.

As a result, Jurgen Klopp’s side did not have the chance to hurt their opponents with their fast counter-attacking play.

Man Utd dropped deep and invited Liverpool to break them down and this is where the hosts struggled.

Liverpool need to seriously think about their Plan B when things are not panning out the way they would like in games.

All square as nothing to separate sides

As the points were shared between these two teams today, it raises more questions than it gave us answers.

Man Utd fans will be concerned about the ineffectiveness of Rasmus Hojland up front, spurning the best chance of the game.

From a Liverpool perspective, they lacked creativity and tried to force the pass all too often.

This time last week, they were sitting pretty at the top of the table, today they will be wondering if they can seal a top four place.

Liverpool firing blanks at Anfield

The Reds’ 34 shots in this game was a Premier League high.

That said, the majority of these were speculative shots from a long way out, which all too often seemed desperate.

On this performance, you wonder whether Jurgen Klopp’s side are missing someone to link midfield and attack who can unlock defences.

They are unlikely to go out and spend in the January transfer window but this game today will show other sides that if you can frustrate this team, they look short of ideas in the final third.

FT: Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

The stats would suggest that this game was one-way traffic.

In fact, Liverpool struggled to create clear-cut chances all game.

Their set-piece delivery and composure in the final third was terrible.

    FT: Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

That was certainly not a game to rememer.

Man Utd seemed to come into this game with quite a negative mindset that their sole focus was to try and not get beaten badly.

Liverpool just didn’t turn up at all and certainly on this performance do not look capable of a title challenge.

The referee brings the game to a close.

It has been a drab affair, not much need to watch the highlights.

Man Utd will be pleased with the point, Liverpool seriously failed to turn up for this game today.

    Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

    90. This game has been a hard watch.

It will be seen as a positive point for the visitors but it has been Liverpool’s worst performance of the season.

They are lacking ideas and struggling to break down a defence that every other side in the league has had no issue doing.

We are going to have five additional minutes.

The ball did strike Shaw’s arm but it bounced up onto it and there was nothing he could do about it.

    Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

    84. There will not be many other sides in the Premier Leagur watching this game in fear of facing these teams.

Liverpool are just shooting from such a distance that it would take a stunning strike to score.

Each time, Man Utd are getting players in front of the shot and blocking them.

    Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

    82. It looks like we are not going to see a goal at all today.

Both sides are struggling for any quality in the final third.

If the tactic today was to bring Liverpool down to their level for Man Utd, it is working admirably.

    Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

    78. Two big chances for the hosts.

Firstly Nunez runs towards goal, a heavy touch takes it into the path of Diaz who shoots but his shot is blocked.

Then the ball is not cleared by the visitors, Konate spins on it and shoots but it is straight at Onana.

Nunez and Diaz come off for Jones and Elliott.

    Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

    76. Salah has switched to playing through the middle and has been anonymous since then.

    Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

    74. The more Liverpool struggle to create anything, Man Utd are getting more confident.

Passing the ball around and starting to come into this more.

The longer this game stays scoreless, you start to think that a sucker punch from the away side may be coming.

  • TODAY, 18:00By Kieran Davies

    Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

    72. Rashford has come on for Garnacho for Man Utd.

With less than twenty minutes remaining, you wonder whether we are going to see a goal today.

Liverpool are lacking ideas in the final third and just having pot shots from distance.

  • TODAY, 17:58By Kieran Davies

    Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

    70. Both sides are having a bad day at the office.

This is certainly not an advert for the Premier League today.

It is more like an advert for the Sunday League.

McTominay shoots from distance, looking for the top corner, but sends it into the stands.
