How NYC does life by the sea.

Anne Hathaway is a city girl at heart, which means she’ll have a city girl’s interpretation of some of social media’s favorite summer trends. Case in point: The actor stepped out on June 18 in a head-to-toe black ensemble that, cast in another hue, might be the kind of look that Diane Lane’s character reaches for in Under the Tuscan Sun.
Hathaway paired a straw sun hat—a coastal grandmother aesthetic staple—with a linen, menswear-inspired vest and a silk midiskirt that grazed her calves. She finished the look with her mesh ballet flats, a recent favorite of the 41-year-old, a Hermès Kelly handbag slung on one arm, and a second black handbag over the other. (The double-tote lifestyle is classic New York!)

Swap the flats for espadrilles, the black straw hat for a classic tan version, and the black separates for the same styles in shades of ivory and cornflower blue, and you’re instantly transported to a small coastal town in Maine, or maybe Rhode Island.
Hathaway had to put her high-fashion stamp on the coastal-grandmother aesthetic, however, including the über-trendy mesh ballet slippers, a style loved by fellow New Yorker Jennifer Lawrence. They might not be the most hygienic option for clomping along the notorious NYC sidewalks, but they sure look good in paparazzi pics, and sometimes that’s the point.
The Idea of You actor returned to the city after wrapping filming on her next project, Flower Vale Street, which, judging by her Instagram, was far less glamorous than her role as the art gallery director in the Amazon rom-com. Gotta say, though, if anyone can pull off a dirt-smeared and blood-spattered tank top, it’s Anne Hathaway.
