Mark Zuckerberg: AI companies are trying to create ‘God’

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says rivals are trying to create “Gods” in AI instead of useful tools for users.

“I’ve seen a big change lately where everyone in the technology field is talking about building a truly intelligent AI . But it’s almost like they think they’re creating God, or something like that. That’s not what we’re doing,” Zuckerberg told YouTuber Kane Kallaway on June 28.

He said that Google ‘s Gemini AI and OpenAI ‘s ChatGPT are following this trend. Meta is also developing many AI tools for different purposes, but most of them follow a different path, but the Meta AI virtual assistant is being focused on development and is ready to operate in the near future.

“Our general view is that AI is not something that can do many things at once. People want to interact with many different people and businesses, so there needs to be many different AIs that can support it, built to reflect different preferences,” Meta CEO explains.

He also stated that AI will not steal jobs or hinder creativity. However, to adapt, people need to be open-minded, constantly learn and continuously upgrade themselves. AI tools are very useful in increasing productivity, especially for creators and social media influencers.

In this area, Zuckerberg said Meta is working to build more tools to support content creation, even for people who don’t consider themselves creators. “I think there will be more creative opportunities in the future for people who are able to take advantage of them. More powerful AI tools will enable that,” he said.

AI is currently the field Meta is interested in and betting billions of dollars after a long time pursuing the virtual metaverse. The company is behind Llama 3, an open-source large language model (LLM) that developers, researchers, and enterprises alike can use as a basis for building their own AI tools.

Meta also upgraded its AI mining system as it aims to buy about 350,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs this year. The company will own a total of about 600,000 chips, including Nvidia’s and some products from other units. “We’re ready to build an AI training system at a scale that’s probably larger than any other single company,” Zuckerberg told The Verge earlier this year. The company also actively recruits AI talent, even willing to put AI experts to work immediately , without the need for an interview. Last year, when laying off more than 20,000 employees, the company tightened spending, but AI personnel still received preferential pay and bonuses.
