Why does golf legend Tiger Woods often wear a red shirt on the last day of golf tournaments?

For all golf fans, they are no stranger to the legendary Tiger Woods with his familiar outfit on the final day of golf tournaments: black hat, red shirt, black pants.

In 15 major titles won (out of a total of 82 PGA Tour championships), Tiger Woods wore a red shirt on the final day. So why does red always accompany Tiger Woods in his glorious moments?

The meaning of red

Many people believe that the reason Tiger Woods chose to wear a red shirt on the final day of tournaments is because red represents a fighting spirit, strength and enthusiasm.

These are also the qualities that fans often see in Tiger Woods when he enters the decisive stage of a tournament. The golfer 𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 in 1975 is always ready to fight to win at all costs or create spectacular comebacks.

Using red as a tactic to psychologically intimidate opponents seems like a reasonable explanation, however, that is not the reason Tiger Woods wore a red shirt on the final day of competition.

Why does Tiger Woods wear red on the final days of competition?

The answer to this question is actually simpler than many people assume: Tiger Woods is superstitious and started wearing red when he played for the Stanford Cardinal golf team.

Tiger Woods once explained on Bunkered: “I got into the habit of wearing red on the last day of sports when I was in college.

I picked a red-shirted university (Stanford University’s traditional uniform is red). So we had to wear red uniforms on the last day of sports events. Then we won and now we keep it up because of superstition.”

Tiger Woods also has another reason: “I wear red on Sundays (the final round of golf tournaments is usually on Sunday) because my mom thinks it’s my lucky color. You know, you should always listen to your mom’s advice.”

ESPN even has an article listing the colors of shirts Tiger Woods has worn in tournaments, most of which are red.

Tiger Woods’ major titles

Tiger Woods is the golfer with the second most major titles in history with 15 wins. In all of those times, Woods wore a red shirt on the final day of the tournament, which was on Sunday (or Monday).

The only person with more major titles than Tiger Woods is Jack Nicklaus (18 times). At 48 years old, it will be difficult for Woods to match Nicklaus’ achievements. However, this cannot erase Tiger Woods’ dominance of golf in the 2000s, nor his 2019 Masters championship that surprised the world.
