World’s richest footballer six times wealthier than billionaire NBA icon Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan is on the brink of dragging his net worth to more than $3.5bn – yet he would still trail the world’s richest footballer by $16.5bn.

The six-time NBA champion is set to sell his stake in the Charlotte Hornets for around $3bn. Jordan bought the Hornets from then BET co-founder Bob Johnson for $180m.

By selling all of his shares to a consortium spearheaded by Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall, he is expected to make a bumper $2bn profit from his investment. This sale will surpass the estimated $1.8bn he has made from his 40 year affiliation with Nike.

However, despite all of these lucrative business ventures, his wealth pales in comparison with Faiq Bolkiah – a former Chelsea and Leicester City academy prospect.

Bolkiah is one of the legal heirs to the throne of Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei. This generational wealth has enabled him to amass an eye-watering net worth of around $20bn.

Unlike Jordan, Bolkiah’s football career never really took off. While he has donned the shirts of Chelsea, Southampton, and Leicester, he never made a senior appearance for either club.

How wealthy do you think Michael Jordan can become? Let us know in the comments section below

The closest he came to playing in the Premier League is the five appearances he made for the Foxes in the UEFA Youth League. Nowadays, he can be found plying his trade for Thai giants Chonburri FC, where he has contributed two goals in 17 appearances.

Fortunately for him, football is a mere side hustle for him as he is set to one day inherit a fortune of around $30bn. The Sultan of Brunei is the longest-serving head of state on the planet and one of the wealthiest individuals in the world.

Jordan needs to replicate his financial success with the Hornets 10 times over just to be considered an equal. The 60-year-old basketball legend is expected to retain a minority stake in the Hornets.

After the NBA completes their vetting and approval process, Schnall and Plotkin will become the governors of the side. When the sale is complete, Jordan will still be a visible presence within the franchise.
