Chelsea have endured another period of change this summer. Mauricio Pochettino has overseen a overhaul of his playing squad at Stamford Bridge as a result of Todd Boehly’s heavy spending.
The Premier League season kicks-off next weekend with the Blues hosting Liverpool on Sunday August 13. There could still yet be more new faces through the door at Cobham to join Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi, Nicolas Jackson, Robert Sanchez and Lesley Ugochukwu.
14 players have left the club, so far. Kai Havertz joined London rivals Arsenal for £65million, with Kalidou Koulibaly (Al-Hilal), Christian Pulisic (AC Milan), Edouard Mendy (Al-Ahli), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (AC Milan), N’Golo Kante (Al Ittihad), Cesar Azpilicueta (Atletico Madrid) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Marseille) all ending their time at the club.
Mason Mount’s initial £55million move to Manchester United had been one exit that split the fanbase. The academy graduate had been a constant face in Chelsea’s squad since breaking into the first team under Frank Lampard in 2019, but failure to agree on a new deal in west London resulted in him joining Erik ten Hag’s side.
Mount, who signed a five-year contract in Manchester, has featured throughout United’s pre-season schedule. And on Saturday, the England international made his Old Trafford debut against Ligue 1 outfit RC Lens.
The home crowd were in good spirits after United confirmed the £72million signing of striker Rasmus Hojlund, but the atmosphere quickly changed in a matter of minutes.
Mount was handed a golden opportunity to open his account for Man United. Alejandro Garnacho played the ball across Brice Samba’s goal for Mount to tap home just seven yards from goal, but he failed to connect with his strike and the ball ran away from him.
United eventually ran-out 3-1 winners thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford, Antony and Casemiro. However, as expected, Chelsea supporters were quick to poke fun at Mount’s miss.
Here’s an example of what they had to say on social media…
@cfc_janty: HOW DID MOUNT NOT SCORE
@CFCBlues_com: I still can’t believe we got £60m for Mount
@ofalamin: To a Chelsea fan, this isn’t surprising at all
@rappo_oosa: What I love to see.
@CFC_Zanny: No way Mount missed an open goal
@ChelseKidHG: The flop of the season contender is absolutely Mason Mount
@CFCPochEra: Mason Mount at his finest
