Stargazing Tools. To stargaze, you only need a sense of wonder, some patience and your eyes. The rest is just a tool to enhance the stargazing experience. A flashlight covered in a red gel sheet, or cellophane. A dedicated stargazing light can be made by simply painting it with red nailpolish (red light does not interfere night vision). A stargazing chart, or an app. A blanket and pillow or inflatable raft, reclining lawn chairs or inflatable rafts for lying on the ground while gazing up. Dress appropriately for the weather. If you have 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren with you, bring treats or a thermos of hot chocolate. Binoculars, or a good telescope.

Accept the Dark. The brighter the celestial skies will appear, the darker the sky. You will have a harder time seeing them if you see any light sources on the ground. Turn off all lanterns, porch light, and other light sources to ensure that you can experience the darkness. You’ll also need to allow your eyes 15-30 minutes to adapt to darkness for optimal night vision.

Light pollution can be found anywhere. Skyglow – the illumination of skies above populated places, mainly by street lights – and light pollution can affect even remote areas. Remote locations are always the best, but don’t be discouraged if you live near a populated area. When the stars aren’t as bright, it is easier to see prominent constellations like the Big Dipper and Canis Major. This can help beginners gain confidence in the night skies.
