Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino are delighted with Marc Cucurella at the moment.
That is according to Fabrizio Romano.
Writing in his Substack column, the Italian journalist has claimed that Mauricio Pochettino is “very happy” with Marc Cucurella and there are no current discussions about a January exit.
The right-back had been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge after a difficult start to the season.
He failed to earn a single minute in Chelsea’s first six Premier League games. However, Cucurella has now started their last three, including the 2-2 draw with Arsenal over the weekend.
Mauricio Pochettino very happy with Marc Cucurella
It is quite clear that Pochettino is pleased with Cucurella at the moment, with the Argentine praising him after his side’s recent London derby.
“He is training really well, that is why he [is] playing like today, against a very good player like [Bukayo] Saka,” Pochettino was quoted as saying by the Evening Standard.
“That is him, he deserves the credit because in the last few months he has worked hard and was able to play on the right side, yes, in this way, only what can happen is the team will be better.”
All things considered, the 25-year-old does deserve some credit. He has never really complained about his situation and was playing at right-back before the Arsenal game, a position he is unfamiliar with.
It did not stop him from performing and helping Chelsea to win their matches against Burnley, Fulham and his former side Brighton & Hove Albion.
Ben Chilwell is currently out injured, so perhaps there really is a chance here for Cucurella to cement that left-back spot.
Levi Colwill has, of course, been playing there this season, but his normal position is centre-back and the England international started there in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal. It is something for Pochettino to perhaps think about.
With Cucurella, Colwill and Chilwell all in his squad, though, the former Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur boss certainly has options in that area of the pitch.
It will now be interesting to see who gets the nod when Chelsea travel to the Gtech Community Stadium to take on Brentford in another London derby this Saturday.
