Oscar winners Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain play neighbors and mothers in 1960s suburbia in the psychological thriller “Mothers’ Instinct.”

The movie, which was filmed in New Jersey in 2022, is getting a limited theatrical release on Friday, July 26 before its August 13 digital release.

That theatrical release includes one Jersey theater, and the location has a little something to do with where the movie was filmed.

Hathaway, who grew up in Millburn, plays Céline in “Mothers’ Instinct,” which is a remake of the Belgian movie “Duelles” (2019).

Céline is best friends with Alice (Chastain) — their sons are the same age — when a terrible accident threatens to shatter their friendship.

Chastain and Hathaway, who are also producers of the movie, filmed in Union, Bergen, Es𝓈ℯ𝓍, and Monmouth counties (see specific locations and trailer below).

As NJ Advance Media previously reported, the production spent about $11.6 million in the state, per the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission.

The movie was filmed at homes on Holly Street in Cranford, so it follows that “Mothers’ Instinct” is playing at the Cranford Theater starting Friday.

Other filming locations included St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church in Ridgewood; Bergen New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus; Community Church in Cedar Grove; and Bayshore Waterfront Park in Port Monmouth, Middletown.

“Mothers’ Instinct” co-stars Josh Charles (“We Own This City,” “The Good Wife”) and Anders Danielsen Lie (“The Worst Person in the World”).

The original Belgian film “Dulles,” which stars Veerle Baetens as Alice and Anne Coesens as Céline, was directed by Olivier Masset-Depasse and based on the 2012 Barbara Abel novel “Derrière la Haine” (“Behind the Hate”).

French cinematographer Benoît Delhomme (“The Theory of Everything,” “Free State of Jones,” “At Eternity’s Gate”) directed “Mothers’ Instinct,” which was originally supposed to be helmed by Masset-Depasse (who remains a producer of the film) and is written by Sarah Conradt.

Hathaway and Chastain previously co-starred in the 2022 film “Armageddon Time,” which was also filmed in New Jersey, and “Interstellar” (2014).
