I bought a new house before knowing it came with a creepy secret

A pair of new homeowners made a startling discovery after moving into their new home and shared their freaky findings with followers on Reddit.

Kyle — who goes by /u/kylemacabre on the message board platform — bought the first nice house he toured after his wife’s new job, which led them to move to New Mexico quickly.

“My wife was hired at a nearby university, so I came out ahead of time to meet a real estate agent and view some homes,” he explained to Newsweek.

“The house was in great shape. It was the best I had seen that whole weekend, but there was just one catch: It had a creepy bomb shelter.”

The spooky underground shelter immediately reminded him of something straight out of a horror movie.

Kyle compared the scene to something he’s seen in horror flicks, such as the monster’s cavern in “Barbarian” or the psychopath Buffalo Bill’s basement in “Silence of the Lambs” where Jodie Foster is in Buffalo Bill’s basement — the part with “the rotting corpse in the bathtub,” per Kyle’s description.

“I didn’t go down that day, as you can imagine,” he wrote on Reddit. “We were afraid to go down. We finally got the nerve up and went down. Alas, there were no chains hanging from the ceiling.”

However, Kyle wasn’t too concerned about finding a decomposing body — he was more worried about finding a decaying building structure.

“All in all, my biggest concern was the state it might have been in,” he told Newsweek. “I was pretty convinced it was going to be super dank and gross down there. I mentally prepared for the worst — maybe a few inches of murky water on the floor or a dirty, old mattress.”

“Luckily, it was only sort of creepy, and there weren’t any poisonous bugs or snakes down there.”

Records obtained by Newsweek showed that the shelter was built in the 1980s, with a large underground room, a shower and a toilet.

The married man joked that the room would now be nicknamed “The Sex Dungeon” but later revealed plans to turn it into a soundproof room where he can play music — a use his neighbors likely won’t complain about.
