Rory McIlroy officially filed for divorce from wife Erica Stoll on Monday, ending their seven-year marriage and 10 years together.
Rory McIlroy publicly dated Erica Stoll in late 2014 and then married in 2017, with whom he has a 3-year-old daughter. McIlroy has filed for divorce in Palm Beach County State Court, and according to him, the settlement process will be kept confidential, ensuring the rights and respect of both parties.
“Rory McIlroy’s media team confirms the divorce. We stress that this is a very difficult time, and the settlement and handling of the issue will take place in the most respectful and gentle manner possible. McIlroy will not be making any further comments on this story,” the representative of the Northern Ireland star announced.

Decided to divorce just one day after PGA Tour victory
According to court records, McIlroy filed for divorce on Monday (May 13, 2024). And despite the chaotic marital situation behind the golf course, McIlroy tried to overcome the psychological barrier to win the Wells Fargo Championship last weekend, marking the 26th title of his career. When he lifted the Wells Fargo Championship trophy, McIlroy was still wearing his wedding ring on his hand.

Rory McIlroy has also been in contact with the media since his victory at Wells Fargo but has not shown any signs of a rift in his marriage. He only briefly shared his confidence and comfort at the tournament as well as expressed his determination for this week’s major.
McIlroy’s decision to divorce is even more surprising because it was announced just two days before the 2024 PGA Championship and he is a promising golfer this week thanks to his improved performance in recent times.

Marriage irretrievably broken
The filing states that McIlroy and Stoll’s marriage is “irretrievably broken,” which is one of the factors that led the couple to decide to go their separate ways after seven years of marriage.
Prenuptial agreement
As disclosed in the filing, McIlroy and Stoll signed a prenuptial agreement on March 17, 2017 (one month before their marriage), and the filing states that “the court should find that the prenuptial agreement is valid and enforceable with the parties’ compliance.” The couple’s agreement is currently being kept confidential and is not being shared for privacy reasons.

The filing also makes it clear that the best option for the future is for both of them to raise their daughter, Poppy, together. Accordingly, both McIlroy and Stoll will share custody and plan 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 care time. The filing also states that both parents are “able to support the 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥” and that support will be determined based on state law.
