In 2011, Wade was awarded full custody of his nephew, Dahveon Morris. Dahveon and his cousin Zaire are very close and even played basketball together at Sierra Canyon School. In April 2019, Wade and Union sent their nephew off to prom in style, with the Cheaper by the Dozen actress posting about the occasion on Instagram. βPROM!!!!!β she wrote alongside a family picture.

Before welcoming their daughter, Union revealed that she had struggled for years with infertility and failed IVF treatments in her memoir Weβre Going to Need More Wine.
βI have had eight or nine miscarriages,β Union wrote. βFor three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant β Iβve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.β
In a 2021 essay for Time, Union opened up more about the coupleβs decision to turn to surrogacy, admitting that at first, she was against the idea.

βI was not ready to do that,β she wrote in the piece. βI wanted the experience of being pregnant. To watch my body expand and shift to accommodate this miracle inside me.β The Bring It On star also shared that she was prepared to take a drug called Lupron, which would give her a 30% chance of bringing a ππππ¦ to term, but could potentially harm her own body. However, her husband was able to change her mind.
In May 2020, Union released a π€π©πͺππ₯renβs book, Welcome to the Party, inspired by the coupleβs daughter Kaavia and their blended family.

Union followed up the success of her first π€π©πͺππ₯renβs book by collaborating on another one with her husband titled Shady Baby. Speaking about the book, Union and Wade explained how Kaaviaβs nickname first came about. βSince she was ππ¨π«π§, you could always tell what she was thinking just by looking at her,β they explained in a press release. βThus, her Shady Baby persona was ππ¨π«π§!β
