Anne Hathaway says she was forced to cut her own hair before filming Locked Down because she was terrified of using a stylist outside of her ‘bubble’

Anne Hathaway reveals she had to suffer a DIY haircut just like everyone else during the pandemic before filming her latest movie.

The actress, 38, admitted she was ‘terrified’ of using a stylist outside of her working bubble while shooting pandemic themed-film, Locked Down.

Anne said she ‘wrongly assumed’ that the hair stylist on set in London would be able to cut her hair, but he said it wasn’t in his s𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁set.

Talking to the Radio Times, Anne said: ‘I was so serious about it [coronavirus] that I gave myself a haircut because I realised it had gone too far.

‘When I started work on set, I assumed my hair stylist would be able to give me a professional do – but then he informed me that he actually didn’t cut hair.

‘He asked me if I wanted to have someone else come to set to clean it up, but I was so freaked out by the thought of being in contact with someone outside the filming bubble that I said no. My hair in the film is the hair I cut myself, which felt very 2020.’

While Anne admitted the first few weeks of lockdown were ‘scary’, she soon realised she was in a fortunate position and was happy to have work to go to.

Scared: The actress, 38, admitted she was ‘terrified’ of using a stylist outside of her working bubble while shooting pandemic themed-film, Locked Down

She said: ‘I had food on my table and I wasn’t worrying about paying the mortgage. It began to feel disrespectful to people who were going through a harder time, so I learnt to change my focus.’

Anne said that although filming a movie can often feel chaotic, Locked Down was especially fast-paced as they filmed it in just 18 days.

The actress, who co-starred with Chiwetel Ejiofor in the film directed by Doug Liman, said: ‘I feel like 2020 was chaotic in so many ways and film-making is also often chaotic, but this project was definitely more chaotic than others.’

Anne also discussed her family life, as she detailed what living with her husband Adam Shulman and their two sons Jonathan, four, and Jack, one, has been like.

The Witches star, who said she has loved being ‘present’ with her kids, said her husband has been ‘amazing’ at noticing the moments where she just needs to take a moment for herself.

She added: ‘I haven’t had to go off and work much, although I don’t feel guilty about working.

‘I feel very, very competent, rather comfortable and proud of the fact that I have a job that can provide for my family – but it’s been great to spend time with the kids. I’ve been taking everything in.’

It comes following the revelation that Anne and her co-star Chiwetel used Marlon Brando’s trick to help them learn lines for Locked Down.

Marlon famously taped pages from his scripts to walls, ceilings and even his co-stars during filming so that he wouldn’t have to learn his lines.

Nearly 50 years after he used the trick in his masterpiece, The Godfather, the two actors admitted they had followed in his footsteps.

London-𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 Ejiofor, 43, who received an Oscar nomination for his role in 12 Years A Slave, revealed that they taped pages to their clothes or held them in front of their faces while the other was on camera.

The film, Locked Down, which was devised and shot during the pandemic, follows a disillusioned couple who plan to steal a diamond from Harrods after struggling to find work during lockdown.

Ejiofor said the nature of filming during Covid meant that they had just over two weeks to shoot the entire film with nearly 200 pages of dialogue to get through.

‘The script came back at about 190 pages odd – it was 18 days to shoot so we were just rattling through reams and reams of the story and the dialogue,’ he said on the Graham Norton Show.

‘I knew from the beginning, if you’ve got that number of pages, you’re thinking there’s no way of really learning all this so we’re just going to have to come up with a couple of tricks to get through it.’

He said that he’d seen a photo showing how Brando, during the filming of The Godfather, stuck pages of his lines on to co-stars such as Robert Duvall.

Ejiofor decided to follow suit for Locked Down.

‘Of all the genius things of Marlon Brando, actually looking like he’s not reading lines is the greatest s𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁,’ he said. Brando died aged 80 in 2004 due to heart failure.
