Despite Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck’s confirmed exits from DC, Wonder Woman 3 is still conceivable

Although Wonder Woman 3 isn’t currently part of the DC Universe, Gal Gadot’s future in it is brighter than that of her DCEU colleagues.

As the universe of DC characters prepares for the launch of the DC Universe, a lot of questions remain about the future of some of the DCEU’s biggest characters, and while Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck are leaving, the future of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman looks a lot brighter. After the many failures and the inconsistency of the DCEU, Warner Bros. decided to launch the DC Universe, which will have a united continuity and story across live-action films, TV, animation, and video games, effectively leaving the DCEU behind.

While some characters from the DCEU will be part of the DC Universe, such as The Suicide Squad’s Amanda Waller, many others won’t be continuing their stories in this new multiverse. The biggest absentees are Henry Cavill’s Superman, as the DC Universe will instead explore the story of a younger Kal-El, and Ben Affleck’s Batman, who was written out of the timeline in The Flash, but there are others whose futures continue to be unknown. Among them is Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, but her future is a lot more likely even though her teammates Cavill and Affleck won’t be a part of the DC Universe.

Gal Gadot Making Wonder Woman 3 Is Still Very Possible

Even though Gal Gadot’s second movie as Wonder Woman, titled Wonder Woman 1984, wasn’t as well-received by critics as the first one, she’s still one of the most consistent characters from the DCEU. The possibility of a third Wonder Woman movie was discussed even before Wonder Woman 1984 was released, and after a period of uncertainty from director Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 3 was officially greenlit in December 2020, with Jenkins returning to direct. However, the DC Universe restructure impacted the plans for Wonder Woman 3, and in December 2022, it was reported that it wouldn’t be moving forward as it doesn’t fit the plans for the DC Universe.

A month later, it was reported that James Gunn and Peter Safran had offered to let Gal Gadot continue playing Wonder Woman in the new DC Universe (via Variety), but the future of Wonder Woman 3 wasn’t addressed. While Gal Gadot doesn’t seem upset about possibly not returning to the DC Universe as Wonder Woman, she reignited hope during Netflix’s Tudum: A Global Fan Event. While promoting the Netflix film Heart of Stone, Gal Gadot was asked about the future of Wonder Woman 3 (via Entertainment Tonight), sharing that “things are being worked behind the scenes” and that when the right moment arrives, it will all be revealed.

Gal Gadot’s most recent appearance as Wonder Woman was in the first act of The Flash, which is part of the DCEU, reigniting curiosity about her future in the DC Universe. Gal Gadot is one of few characters from the DCEU that would make sense to bring back as part of the DC Universe, especially as this new era will see a prequel series titled Paradise Lost, focusing on life on Themyscira before Wonder Woman’s 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡, which would be very beneficial to her overall story.

Wonder Woman Isn’t Being Replaced (Yet), So Gal Gadot Is Easier To Bring Back

Superman and Batman are getting new versions in the DC Universe, but that’s not the case for Wonder Woman – at least not at the moment. As mentioned above, the DC Universe will explore the younger years of Superman in the movie Superman: Legacy, and for that, Gunn and Safran are already looking for a new Superman/Clark Kent. Batman not only continues to have his own story in a separate side of the DC Universe thanks to Matt Reeves’ The Batman and its sequel, but he will also get a new movie, The Brave and the Bold, which will introduce a new version of the Dark Knight.

While the future of Wonder Woman and her third movie is unclear, Gal Gadot is not being replaced, or at least not for now. Unlike Cavill and Affleck, Warner hasn’t announced a recast of Wonder Woman, and after her above-mentioned cameo in The Flash, there’s hope for Gadot to reprise her role in the DC Universe, either in Wonder Woman 3 or another project alongside other heroes.

Recasting Gadot’s Wonder Woman Would Be Harder Than Cavill’s Superman & Affleck’s Batman

If Wonder Woman was to be recast in the DC Universe, Warner would be facing a bigger challenge than recasting the DCEU’s Superman and Batman. Both Cavill’s Superman and Affleck’s Batman were divisive versions, with the former going through some truly dark changes in Man of Steel that didn’t appeal to the audience and the latter being a more mature Batman that didn’t resonate with viewers. Both Superman and Batman also suffered from the inconsistency of the DCEU, so recasting them for the DC Universe wasn’t a difficult or controversial decision.

Recasting Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, on the other hand, would be a lot more difficult. Unlike Cavill’s Superman and Affleck’s Batman, Gadot’s Wonder Woman was praised by critics and viewers and Gadot is seen as inhabiting the role perfectly. The DC Universe would face a lot of criticism if Gunn and Safran decided to cast a new Wonder Woman, and they would have a big challenge on their hands as finding someone who embodies the character as well as Gal Gadot does won’t be easy. Even with all the uncertainty around Wonder Woman 3 and her place in the DC Universe, Gal Gadot’s future in this universe is more likely than that of most of her colleagues.
