Focus Features has released a new trailer for the highly anticipated latest film of filmmaker Robert Eggers, who pays tribute to F.W. Murnau’s classic 1922 film Nosferatu.
Director Eggers, who previously directed The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman, has been working on a long-awaited project called The Bikeriders and it premiered with copies of it in cinemas this past weekend.
The story is described as a Gothic tale of obsession between a frightened young woman in 19th-century Germany and the ancient Transylvangian vampire who pursues her, carrying untold horror with him.
Murnau’s original was shot in black-and-white with a cinematic style reminiscent of German Expressionism, but this version features a more artistic style reminiscent of 19th-century Romanticism.
Bill Skarsgard, Lily-Rose Depp, Nicolas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson and Simon McBurney star in the film which was shot in Prague a year ago.
Skarsgard, who portrays the vampire Count Orlok, remains concealed in the trailer, so his complete appearance is still unknown. Eggers has talked about how Skarsgard ‘completely disappears’ in this film, unlike the Pennywise films where he is recognizable under the makeup. Egger’s latest remake of the classic German horror movie itself was an unlicensed adaptation of Dracula, by embracing the oppressively dark and creepy atmosphere of the original film.
Vampire movies and TV shows have been abundant in the past couple of years. There were Renfield, Abigail, Interview with a Vampire, What We Do in the Shadows, and others all explored different genres with varying degrees of success while focusing on everyone’s favorite creatures of the night.
Nosferatu will open in cinemas on Christmas Day.
